Bing Webmaster vs Search Console: Why the Numbers Differ

By Ugur Saritepe · October 16, 2026

Bing Webmaster Tools and Search Console give different numbers for the same site, and position is the one that misleads. On game-scout.app, 28 days to 2026-10-09, Bing put a better average position on all 28 pages both engines showed. Its page report also held no row worse than position 10, which Search Console's does.

Where this came from

game-scout.app is my other site, a catalogue of curated PlayStation lists. In August I was looking at one of its pages, the story-driven games list, and typed this to the assistant I work with:

It is one of the best page in bing but it never shows up in google lets compare these.

That session compared one page and ended without a fix. Bing had it at position 5, Google at 26. The comparison I never ran was the whole site: every page both engines report, on the same 28 days, with each console's own export. I ran it on 2026-10-16, over 2026-09-12 to 2026-10-09.

The headline numbers

query_search_analytics
sc-domain:game-scout.app, 2026-09-12 to 2026-10-09, totals
result
Google clicks 2,435 impressions 143,588 position 8.62
Bing clicks 541 impressions 23,419 (daily series, same 28 days)
Bing position 5.19 (page report, impression-weighted)
2026-10-16

Bing brought about a fifth of the clicks Google did, at a higher CTR (2.3% against 1.7%) and a position more than three places better. Read at face value, that says Bing ranks this site far higher than Google does. The first problem is that the 5.19 does not come from the same report as the 541. Bing has three reports, and on this site they do not agree with each other.

Bing's three reports disagree with each other

report (Bing API) rows clicks impressions share of daily impr
daily traffic series 28 541 23,419 100%
page report (weekly) 247 405 14,111 60%
query report (weekly) 400 340 1,372 5.9%

The query report returned exactly 100 rows in every one of 42 weeks back to December 2025. That is a cap, not a coincidence. Microsoft's API reference for the query call describes it as traffic statistics for top queries, updated every week. On this site the top 100 a week carry 63% of the clicks and 6% of the impressions.

The page report held 247 weekly rows in the window and none of them worse than position 10. Across its whole 42-week history, 2 of 1,069 rows are past position 10, the deepest at 13. On the Google side, 21% of the impressions in the query rows Search Console returns sit past position 10. Either Bing almost never shows this site on page 2, or its page report does not include those impressions. The report covers 60% of Bing's own daily impressions, so something is left out, and Bing's own comparison post says its data includes Copilot answers, news, images and video alongside web search. Bing does not say which of those the page report drops. I cannot tell from the API either.

Search Console has its own version of this, which I measured on the same site when its query rows did not add up to the total. The difference is that Google says in its help pages which rows are withheld and why. Bing's reports just come back shorter.

Same page, two positions

To compare like with like I joined the two by page: every URL with at least 100 Bing impressions in the window and a Search Console row, with www and non-www folded together. That gave 28 pages. Bing reported the better position on all 28. Median 4.85 on Bing, 8.4 on Google.

Then I removed the part of the gap that comes from the reports alone. For each page I recomputed Google's position from only its query rows at position 10 or better, the same cut Bing's page report appears to make. That needs every query row, 6,146 of them, so I pulled them from Google's API directly: our own tool caps a call at 250 rows. A sample of the biggest pages:

page Bing pos Google pos Google, page-1 rows only
trucking 4.5 6.9 6.3
detective 3.8 7.3 7.0
fishing 5.8 7.8 7.4
story-driven 5.2 14.4 6.7
local co-op 5.9 25.7 5.3
flight 5.2 8.8 8.5

The cut moved the Google median from 8.4 to 7.2, and Bing still reported the better position on 25 of the 28 pages. So the report difference explains the worst cases, like the local co-op list at 25.7 on Google, where only 8% of the query impressions I could see sit at position 10 or better. It does not explain detective at 3.8 against 7.0. Some of Bing's lead may be real. Two limits on reading it: Bing gives one whole-number position per page per week, so its figures are good to about half a place, and the Google query rows hold 35% of the site's impressions because Search Console withholds rare queries. Neither console gives me a way to split ranking from reporting, and I have no Bing results page to check against.

Bing's average position and Google's are not measured on the same set of impressions. Compare them page by page, and cut Google's side to page-1 rows before you believe the gap.

The two engines do not even rank the same pages

The ten pages with the most Google impressions and the ten with the most Bing impressions share no URL. Google's biggest page, the flight games list, had 12,452 impressions; Bing gave it 272. The other way round is stranger. Five of the 102 pages in Bing's report have no Search Console row at all in the window, and I inspected all five in Search Console on 2026-10-16:

page Bing impr Bing clicks Google URL Inspection
best-flight-games-pc 1,589 59 URL is unknown to Google
best-yakuza-games 593 19 Discovered - currently not indexed
how-long-is-the-witcher-3 583 4 URL is unknown to Google
best-resident-evil-games 181 9 Discovered - currently not indexed
best-wrestling-games 164 5 URL is unknown to Google

Bing's top page by impressions, with 59 clicks in four weeks, is a URL Google says it has never seen. Together the five carry 96 clicks, a quarter of Bing's page report. Four of them went live between 2026-08-18 and 2026-09-05; the flight list's date is not in the site's git history. That is the indexed on Bing but not Google symptom, found by accident while comparing numbers, and URL is unknown to Google is where its diagnosis starts.

One more thing showed up in the join. Bing files 12% of this site's page-report impressions under www URLs, 1,633 of 14,111. Search Console has no www row in the window. Bing filed almost everything under www until May and has moved most of it since, but not all. If you add up a Bing page report without folding the two hosts together, the same page counts twice.

What the ranked pages say

I read the pages ranking for this question on 2026-10-16. Bing's 2024 comparison post ranks first for two of the three phrasings and lists the same four metrics on both sides, with Copilot and other surfaces in Bing's count. It does not say how Bing computes average position and shows no site's numbers. A comparison updated 2026-07-07 explains that Bing splits click position from impression position and says Bing does not anonymize anything. On our site the query report stops at 100 rows a week, which is a different way of not showing you the long tail. None of the pages I read joins one site's two consoles by page.

Google's definition of position is the topmost position of a link to your page, averaged across all queries it appeared for. Every deep query counts, which is why a list with a few page-1 queries and hundreds of page-3 ones reads 25.7. That is also why average position misleads inside Search Console alone.

What we have not done

Our own Bing command returned one blank row for the page report, because it reads the wrong field; I read the raw API instead, and the command is not fixed. I have not submitted the five Bing-only pages to Google or worked out why they were never fetched. And TrafficTriage reads Search Console, not Bing Webmaster: the Bing half of this comparison came from a script, not from the product.

How to compare the two in fifteen minutes

  1. Take Bing's total from the daily traffic series, not the page or query reports. Good: you quote one total per engine for the same dates. Bad: you add up Bing's query report and call it the site.
  2. Fold www and non-www before you add anything up.On our site that was 12% of Bing's page impressions.
  3. Join by page, same 28 days, pages with at least 100 impressions on Bing. Site averages hide which pages each engine is even showing.
  4. Recompute Google's position for each page from its query rows at 10 or better. If the gap closes, it was the report. If Bing still wins by two or more places on most pages, it is more likely ranking.
  5. Inspect every page Bing reports and Search Console does not. On game-scout that was five pages and a quarter of Bing's page-report clicks, all of them unknown to Google or not indexed.

If one of those pages turns out unknown to Google, the free triage report checks from the outside whether it is crawlable and indexable. The rest of these measured reads are in the AI-assistant SEO series.

FAQ

Why does Bing Webmaster Tools show a better average position than Search Console?

Partly because the reports count different things. On game-scout.app over 28 days, Bing's page report held no row worse than position 10 and only 60% of the impressions Bing's own daily total counted, while 21% of the Search Console impressions we could see sat past position 10. Removing those from the Google side moved the median page from 8.4 to 7.2. Bing's median was 4.85, so some of the lead may be real, but the two averages are not measured on the same set.

Why don't Bing Webmaster Tools numbers add up?

Bing has three reports and they cover different slices. On our site the daily traffic series counted 541 clicks in 28 days, the page report 405 and the query report 340. The query report returned exactly 100 rows every week for 42 weeks, which Microsoft's API reference calls statistics for top queries. Treat the daily series as the total and the other two as samples of it.

Should Bing and Google rank the same pages?

No. On game-scout.app the ten pages with the most Bing impressions and the ten with the most Google impressions did not share one URL. Bing's top page had 1,589 impressions and 59 clicks in 28 days, and URL Inspection says Google has never heard of it. A page doing well on one engine tells you nothing about its index state on the other.

How do I compare Bing Webmaster Tools and Search Console for the same page?

Use the same 28 days on both, fold www and non-www URLs together, and compare pages, not site totals. For each page, also compute Google's position from only the query rows at position 10 or better, because Bing's page report does not seem to include deeper rows. If Bing still wins after that, the difference is more likely to be ranking than reporting.

The Google half of this join is one tool call. Connect Search Console to the TrafficTriage MCP server and ask your assistant for one page's query rows over the same 28 days as your Bing export. Each call returns up to 250 rows with exact totals, enough for the page-1 cut on most single pages, and the comparison happens in the reply. It does not read Bing Webmaster; that half you still bring yourself.
